Note (OOC): The original author of this piece is Wilting Rose on Magical Horizons. The original thread is here.
Firstly, welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! This is a role-playing board and you are required to adhere to the following rules:
Role-Playing Rules
1.) Apparition. Apparating is allowed only by chracters who are 17 years of age or older who have their Apparition License (it must say "Apparition License" under your name in your profile). It is not allowed inside Hogwarts or on Hogwarts grounds. You must be at least "Outside Hogwarts" to aparate.
2.) God-RPing. God-RPing is strictly not allowed. God RP-ing is when you write other people's characters in your posts, for example if I were to have said "Kiki was worried about Rose, she had been under lots of stress," that would be wrong. You are not allowed to give other characters actions and thoughts. Only that character's rightful owner is allowed to do that.
3.) Perfection. Please don't play a 'Mary Sue' or 'Gary Stu' character. This refers to characters that are flawless and simply perfect at everything they do. This is also known as godmoding. Characters with too many positive traits are boring, unrealistic, and difficult to role-play with. Please remember that having a charatcer with weaknesses does not say anything about you or your real life personality. It just means that you are a decent role-player. Godmoding also refers to characters that are invincible or unable to be harmed. You're going to get hurt once in awhile, it's human nature.
4.) Realism. Here you may choose either a real character in any of the 6 Harry Potter books to play, or you can make up your own new character. Only one person can play each of the actual Harry Potter characters (for example, there can't be 2 people playing Hermione), and if you choose a character from the books, you must try to stay as true to the character as possible (for example, you can't say something like "Hermione completely blew off studying for her Potions exam..." because we all know Hermione would never do that!). This goes for the appearance and description of the character as well (for example, you can't say that Hermione has long blonde hair because she doesn't!). If you choose to make up your own character, you are given more freedom in those respects - you choose how they act and what they look like.
5.) Respect. Please be polite and respectful to all members. Do not confuse IC (in character arguments/differences with RL (real life) arguments. If you encounter a character that dislikes you, this is not a personal offense but realistic roleplay. Please try to keep this difference in mind at all times.
Posting Rules
Writing in certain styles mean certain things.
1.) In Character. IC stands for 'in character'. Some boards say 'Only IC posts allowed here' meaning that you may only post on those boards as your character.
2.) Out of Character. OOC stand for 'out of character'. Some boards say 'Only OOC posts allowed here' meaning that you may only post on those boards as your self in real life.
Note (Exception): When a board says 'Only IC posts allowed here', it means that you may not start OOC threads in that board. Because it is sometimes difficult to remain in character all the time (for example, if you had something really important to say or some OOC information was needed in order to help you reply), you may use OOC in an IC board only in parthesis in a reply to a thread, not as a new thread.
An example would be:
I'll get you if it's the last thing I do. Jenny narrowed her eyes at Bob, unafraid of him.
***
"Oh really? I don't think so!"
(OOC: Bob is a Legilimens, so he can read your thoughts.)
Staring back, Bob grinned. "Scared now, Jenny?"
Sorry, that's sort of a bad example, but I hope it gets the point across.
3.) Shouting. Writing in CAPS and/or BOLD means your character is shouting. Please keep shouting to a mimimum; people don't like to be shouted at in real life, so why would they here?
4.) Thinking. Writing in italics resembles your thoughts. Keep in mind that only a legilimens can read another person's thoughts.
5.) Spelling & Grammar. Your posts don't have to have perfect spelling and grammar, but they do need to be readable. Everyone makes typos now and then, but it is very difficult to reply to something that the reader can't even understand. This site accepts and welcomes writers of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, and provides help to those who want to improve their work.
6.) Thread Location. Please try and put your post on the correct board. For example, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, you would post in the Birthday Wishes Board, not someplace else. If a thread is posted in the wrong location, it may be moved to the correct location by a moderator.
7.) Typing. Please don't type like the following: 'Kewl Talk': "U R da bomb!", "U R un4gettable n U will B 4eva", etc. Don't use "u" for you, "r" for are, "4" for for, etc. Spell it out, please. 'Distorted Text': OmG tHiS iS rEaLLy AnNoYiNg To ReAd ThRoUgH, iSn'T iT? Also, please don't use excessive smilies or excessive punctuation.
8.) Third Person/Past Tense. Post on the boards as if you were writing a story, in third person, not first person (i.e. "Hermione walked in" instead of "I walked in.")
A typical post in third-person should be something like this:
Wilting Rose walked into the Three Broomsticks to get a drink.
Pushing her long, wavy brown hair back from her eyes, she sat on a stool by the bar, and grinned at Kiki as she walked over.
"Hey, Kiki - gimme a Butterbeer," said Rose, while massaging her temples. "It's been a really hard day... I swear, I should never have allowed Vampires to become a part of the school system. It was a bad idea, but Ace always seemed to make it work."
Tip: Introducing yourself to the school is best done in the Entrance Hall or your Common Room.
